CWS Window Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We install and replace CWS window units and components throughout San Diego, with most complete window installations running between $900 and $2,800 per opening depending on size, frame material, and glass package. We keep common CWS replacement parts on our trucks and can typically complete a single-window swap in four to six hours once the unit is on site. Most San Diego homeowners discover a problem the same way: a crank that suddenly spins without moving the sash, a window that drops an inch when you let go, or condensation that no longer dries out between the glass panes by mid-morning.

Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS produces several window lines, and the installation and hardware requirements are not interchangeable across all of them. The three series we see most often in San Diego homes are the CWS 8000 series (aluminum, common in coastal condos and mid-century builds), the CWS 6000 vinyl series, and the CWS impact-rated lines that became popular after hurricane-coast codes drove wider adoption of laminated glass in coastal markets. If your window has a CWS label, it will be on the frame edge or the spacer bar, usually etched into a corner of the glass on impact units. That etching matters: it tells us the glass package, which changes weight, which changes the hinge and operator spec.
OEM CWS hardware is what we recommend for moving parts like crank operators, hinges, and locking mechanisms. The aftermarket equivalents we see at big-box retailers often have slightly different screw spacing or a shorter arm throw, which means the window closes almost right but never seals against the weather stripping. For non-moving glazing beads and exterior trim, quality aftermarket profiles work fine, and we tell you which we’re quoting and why. Spencer Odell can identify most CWS window series from a photo of the label and the operator arm, so a picture texted to our office at (619) 793-3248 gets you a faster answer than a drop-in visit will.
Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing
- The crank spins or clicks without moving the sash. The gear teeth inside the operator have stripped, usually because the window was forced past the end of its travel or the hinge drag increased over time until the plastic gear gave out. This is the single most common CWS operator failure we replace in San Diego.
- The sash sags or scrapes the sill on one side. The pivot or hinge shoe has worn unevenly, which means the full weight of the insulated glass unit is no longer balanced. Left alone, the sash will eventually chip the frame corner or bow the latch rail.
- Condensation between the glass that doesn’t clear. The sealed unit has lost its argon or krypton fill and the desiccant inside the spacer is exhausted. In San Diego’s marine layer, a failed seal shows itself faster because the humidity differential between inside and outside is nearly constant for months.
- The lock no longer draws the sash tight. CWS multipoint locks rely on a series of small rollers and keepers; when one roller wears flat, the handle feels loose and the sash leaves a gap you can see daylight through at the meeting rail.
- You can feel air moving around the frame on a windy day. The original installation seal has dried and separated, or the frame shims have compressed. On San Diego’s west-facing coastal exposures, we see this in as little as seven years on aluminum frames exposed to salt air.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you should expect to pay for a CWS window installation in San Diego before you call anyone:
- Operator or hinge replacement: $180 to $390 per window, parts included
- Full sash replacement (same frame): $450 to $900 per opening
- Complete CWS window replacement: $900 to $2,800 per opening
- Impact-rated CWS replacement: $1,700 to $3,400 per opening
These ranges cover the part or unit, labor, exterior sealant, and disposal of the old window. What moves the price is mostly the glass package (impact glass is heavier and costs more) and whether the original frame is square enough to accept a drop-in replacement or needs to be pulled and reset. You get a written price before we start, and every CWS window we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation is not right, we make it right, no argument needed.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely clean the track, check for loose fasteners, and feel for air leaks with a damp hand on a breezy day. What we advise against is replacing a CWS operator or hinge yourself, especially on an impact-rated unit. Those sashes weigh significantly more than a standard double-glazed window, and when the last pivot pin comes out, the sash drops hard. We have seen fingers pinched, tracks torn out of the frame, and one shattered impact unit that cost more than the labor would have.
If the sash is fogged or the operator is stripped, call (619) 793-3248 and describe what you’re seeing. A live person answers, and we can usually tell you over the phone whether you need a hardware replacement or a full unit, along with a price range for your neighborhood.
FAQs
In San Diego’s coastal climate, a properly installed CWS window will last twenty to thirty years, but hardware components like operators and hinges typically need replacement at the ten to fifteen year mark. Salt air exposure in neighborhoods like Ocean Beach, Point Loma, and Mission Beach accelerates frame seal failure by up to thirty percent compared to inland areas like Clairemont or Serra Mesa. Call (619) 793-3248 and we’ll tell you whether your specific issue is hardware or a true seal failure.
Hardware failures on a CWS window are usually repairable without replacing the whole unit, which is why we stock operators, hinges, and locking components for the 6000 and 8000 series. If the insulated glass unit itself is fogged, that is a replacement, not a repair: once the seal is compromised, the gas fill is gone and the glass will never clear permanently. Call (619) 793-3248 with a photo of the label and we can usually tell you which path you’re on.
A single CWS window installation is a one-day job, typically finished in four to six hours from the time we arrive, with the workspace swept and the old window loaded for disposal before we leave. If you are replacing multiple CWS windows in a San Diego home, two to three windows per day is realistic. We’ll give you a schedule in writing before work starts.
We stock common CWS operators, hinges, locks, and glazing beads for the 6000 and 8000 series on our trucks, and we also stock compatible parts for PGT, CGI, and ES Windows. If your CWS window needs a part we do not carry, we typically have it sourced within two to three business days for San Diego addresses. Call (619) 793-3248 and a live person will check inventory while you’re on the phone.
Hale Windows San Diego is an independently owned and operated service provider and is not affiliated with CWS. We install and service CWS products because they are well-built and we believe in matching the right replacement to the window that is already in your home.
If your CWS window is fogged, sagging, or stuck, call (619) 793-3248 for a free estimate. We tell you exactly who is coming to your home before the truck pulls up, and the price you’re quoted is the price you pay. A window that leaks air is just a very expensive wall decoration, and San Diego’s marine layer has already given yours enough chances.
