Therma-Tru Front Door Replacement in San Diego: What to Know First

Therma-Tru front door replacement in San Diego typically runs $1,800 to $4,600 for a full slab-and-frame job, depending on glass package, size, and whether we’re reusing your existing threshold or installing new. As an independent Therma-Tru service provider, Hale Windows San Diego replaces failed entry doors throughout San Diego County, usually completing the work in one day once the door arrives. We quote a written price before anything gets ordered, so you’ll know the exact number before you commit.

If you own a Therma-Tru door that’s warped, waterlogged, sagging on its hinges, or letting daylight through the weatherstripping, this page tells you what’s actually wrong, what replacement costs in San Diego, and how we handle the job from measurement to cleanup. How Therma-Tru Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Therma-Tru builds a solid door, but every product line has predictable weak points. Spencer Odell and our crew have pulled apart enough of them in San Diego homes to know exactly where they give up. Here’s what we see most often:

  • Fiber-Classic and Smooth-Star skin delamination from sun and salt exposure. These are Therma-Tru’s fiberglass-skinned doors, and they’re everywhere in Clairemont, Point Loma, and Ocean Beach. The polyurethane core is excellent, but years of direct sun on west-facing entries combined with salt air can cause the fiberglass skin to separate at the stile edges. Once the skin pulls away, water gets into the core and the door starts feeling spongy. We replace the slab rather than patching, because a re-glued skin fails again within a season or two.
  • Warped stiles on older Benchmark series doors. Therma-Tru’s Benchmark line was their budget play for years, and the stiles on earlier models were solid wood rather than laminated. Wood moves. In San Diego’s dry summers, those stiles bow and the door stops seating against the weatherstrip. You’ll see light at the latch side. A replacement slab with the newer composite stiles fixes it permanently.
  • Rotted bottom rail on doors with failed sweeps. This one is not unique to Therma-Tru, but we see it constantly on San Diego homes where irrigation overspray hits the entry. If the door sweep tears or detaches, water wicks up into the bottom rail and rots it from inside. By the time you notice soft wood at the kick plate, the rail is gone. We replace the full door rather than scabbing in a splice, because Therma-Tru cores cannot be properly repaired once saturated.
  • Threshold corrosion and freeze on Classic-Craft doors with metal adjustable sills. Therma-Tru’s adjustable sills are convenient at install, but the adjustment screws and cap channels corrode in coastal air. After a few winters near Mission Bay or Pacific Beach, the sill won’t adjust and the door drags or gaps. We swap in a new composite or aluminum sill, depending on exposure, and set the door for a clean sweep contact.
  • Failed cam-lock corner joints on doors with decorative glass inserts. Therma-Tru’s glass packages (the decorative divided-lite inserts on Classic-Craft and Fiber-Classic models) are held with corner cams that eventually loosen. The glass starts rattling and air moves through the frame. Sometimes it’s a simple cam replacement; other times the insert frame is too far gone and we replace the entire door with a new glass package. We’ll tell you which one you need before we order anything.

Our Therma-Tru Front Door Replacement Process

Here’s what actually happens when you call us for a Therma-Tru front door replacement in San Diego:

  1. 1
Measure and diagnosis. We come out, measure the rough opening in three places, check the existing threshold, and confirm the failure. We’ll tell you if the door is salvageable or if you’re past that point. No charge for the visit.
  2. 2
Written quote. You get a line-item price in writing before anything is ordered. That number covers the door slab, hinges, sweep, hardware, installation, and haul-away of the old door. No change orders.
  3. 3
Parts decision. We discuss OEM Therma-Tru parts versus quality aftermarket hardware and weatherstripping. Therma-Tru’s own weatherstripping fits precisely, and we default to it, but we will not put aftermarket hinges on a heavy Classic-Craft door. Some corners are not worth cutting.
  4. 4
Installation. The old door comes out, the new Therma-Tru slab goes in, we dial in the reveal gaps, set the sweep and threshold, and install or reinstall your hardware. Most jobs take four to six hours.
  5. 5
Air and water test. We run a quick smoke pencil around the weatherstripping and a water spray test on the sill. If air is moving or water is getting past the sweep, we fix it before we leave.
  6. 6
Guarantee and walkthrough. Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the door binds, leaks, or does not latch cleanly within the year, we come back and make it right, no argument.

What Therma-Tru Front Door Replacement Costs in San Diego

Here are realistic ranges for Therma-Tru front door replacement in the San Diego market, based on what we quote regularly across the city:

  • Slab replacement, no glass, standard 36×80 (Benchmark or Smooth-Star): $1,800 – $2,600
  • Fiber-Classic slab with single sidelite: $2,800 – $3,900
  • Classic-Craft full entry system (door, two sidelites, transom): $4,000 – $6,200
  • Adding decorative glass package (Rain, Reed, or similar): $600 – $1,400 more
  • Sill and threshold replacement with new slab: $300 – $700 added

What moves the price: door size (custom heights add cost), glass inserts, whether you’re keeping existing frame or replacing the whole unit, and hardware finish. A steel Benchmark door in a standard opening runs toward the low end. A Classic-Craft with two sidelites and a transom in a custom color is a high-end job. You’ll get an exact number on the written quote. Call (619) 793-3248 to schedule your free estimate.

Why San Diego Homeowners Call Hale Windows San Diego for Therma-Tru Work

Most San Diego door companies install whichever brand they get the best margin on. We service and install eight lines, including Therma-Tru, and we are honest about which product fits the job. If a PGT or CGI door makes more sense for your exposure, we’ll say so. That’s the difference between a sales team and a crew that actually works on doors.

Every technician who shows up at your door is background-checked, identity-verified, photo-badged, and sent to you by name and photo before the visit. We call it the Threshold Standard, and it exists because opening your door to a stranger should not feel like a gamble. You’ll know exactly who is coming before they arrive. And the price in your hand before any work starts is the same price on the invoice when the job is done. We have operated that way since 2009, as an independently owned and operated part of the Threshold Group family of home-service brands.

Spencer Odell put it plainly during a recent job in the Gaslamp Quarter: a window that leaks air is just a very expensive wall decoration. Same goes for a front door. The door is either sealed, square, and latching, or it’s not doing its job. We make sure it is.
