Therma-Tru Window Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Therma-Tru window installation in San Diego typically runs $220 – $680 per window for a full frame replacement, including labor and trim, and we stock compatible weatherstripping, sash balances, and glide parts on our trucks for same-day repairs. Most San Diego homeowners discover a problem when the window won’t stay open, a draft appears around the sash, or condensation fogs between the panes, signaling a failed seal. The good news: Therma-Tru windows are built on an extruded aluminum-reinforced composite frame, which means the frame itself rarely fails in our coastal climate. What wears out first are the moving parts: the balances, the weatherstripping, and the glazing, and those are the parts we replace most often across San Diego, from Rancho Bernardo to Imperial Beach.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru manufactures window units under two primary categories: their replacement-series windows and the windows bundled into their door systems, particularly the Slim-Line and Classic-Craft sidelight configurations. If your San Diego home has a Therma-Tru entry door with sidelights or a transom, the glass units are matched to the door’s frame, not the wall rough opening, and that’s where compatibility gets tricky. You can identify your series by checking the label etched into the corner of the glass or the serial sticker along the sash edge. The etched code will show a “TT” prefix followed by a manufacturing date. When we replace parts, we always match the original balance weight and glazing thickness to the series. For Therma-Tru specifically, OEM parts fit better than generics because the balance channels and weatherstrip kerfs are milled to proprietary dimensions. A generic spring tension from a big-box store often leaves the sash tilted or seals the weatherstrip too tightly, which causes the lock to bind. Aftermarket glazing beads work fine, but we will not install an aftermarket balance in a Therma-Tru frame: the channel depth differences are too tight to risk a warranty callback.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Window Installation Is Failing
- The window won’t stay open or closes on its own: The constant-force balance inside the jamb has lost spring tension. In San Diego’s salt air, the coiled steel fatigues faster than it does inland, especially within a mile of the coast.
- A draft you can feel on a still day: The wool-pile weatherstripping has compressed or pulled away from the kerf. Once it loses contact with the sash, moving air finds the gap every time.
- Condensation between the panes: The sealed insulating glass unit has lost its desiccant or the edge seal has failed. Once moisture shows inside the glass, no repair will restore clarity. The glass unit gets replaced.
- The lock never quite engages: The keeper has shifted as the frame settled, or the sash cam is worn. You will see a small metal roller at the bottom corner of the sash; when it flattens on one side, the lock misses its slot.
- You can see daylight through the corner joints: The corner gaskets have shrunk from UV and temperature cycling. San Diego’s inland valleys hit 40-degree daily swings in fall, and that movement works gaskets loose over a few seasons.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is how Therma-Tru window installation pricing breaks down in San Diego:
- Weatherstripping replacement: $95 – $180 per window, parts and labor included.
- Constant-force balance replacement: $120 – $240 per sash, depending on the sash weight and series.
- Insulating glass unit replacement: $260 – $520 per unit, measured to the original thickness and gas fill.
- Full frame Therma-Tru window replacement: $450 – $680 per window, including flashing, trim, and interior finish.
Every quote is written and in your hands before any work starts. The price on that sheet is the price you pay: no change orders because we found something in the wall, no surprise line items at the end. We carry the common Therma-Tru balances, weatherstrips, and glide buttons on the truck, so most repairs are done in one visit. And every repair carries a written guarantee: if the part fails or the draft returns within the covered period, the second visit is free, no argument, under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do two checks without tools: look for a visible gap between the weatherstripping and the sash, and run a dollar bill along the closed seam to see if it slides out easily. If it slides, you have confirmed a compression loss. What you should not attempt is removing a Therma-Tru sash to replace a balance: the constant-force spring sits under enough tension to snap back into the frame, and the aluminum jamb channels will slice a finger open faster than most homeowners expect. We have repaired more than a few snapped-balance injuries-turned-callbacks in San Diego where someone watched a video and ended up with a bent jamb and a swollen hand. If the glass unit itself is fogged, that is a sealed-unit replacement requiring a glazing table and exact pressure settings. There is no safe homeowner workaround there. Call us at (619) 793-3248 and save the trip to urgent care.
FAQs
A Therma-Tru window installed within five miles of the coast will typically give you 18 – 25 years before the moving parts need replacement; the composite frame itself will often outlast the house. What cuts into that lifespan is the marine layer’s salt content and the UV load, which dry out gaskets and accelerate weatherstrip compression. Inland San Diego homes, from El Cajon to Poway, usually get a few extra years out of the same parts.
Most failing Therma-Tru windows can be repaired by replacing the balances, weatherstripping, or glazing unit, which costs significantly less than a full frame replacement. The exception is when the frame itself has rotted or warped, which is rare except on wood-clad Therma-Tru units that have been repeatedly wet. If the frame is straight and the glass is intact, we repair it. Call (619) 793-3248 for an exact quote, and we will tell you which one applies to your window.
A weatherstripping or balance swap takes 45 – 90 minutes per window once we are on site. A full insulating glass unit replacement takes about two hours, including curing time for the sealant. A complete Therma-Tru window replacement, frame and all, is a half-day job for one window and a full day for three or four, assuming we are not fighting drywall repair work around the opening. We book by the job, not by the hour, so the time estimate is part of your written quote.
Yes, we keep Therma-Tru balances, weatherstrips, glide buttons, and corner gaskets stocked on our trucks for same-day repairs in San Diego, and we can order any insulating glass unit within 5 – 7 business days direct from the Therma-Tru supply line. We also carry parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS window lines, so if you have a mixed home, one stop covers all of it. If you have the serial label from the side of your sash, call us at (619) 793-3248 before we come out, and we will bring the right part on the first trip.
