CGI Window Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

CGI window installation in San Diego typically runs $850 – $2,400 per opening for a full frame replacement, with retrofit sash swaps landing between $350 and $700 when the existing frame is sound. We stock CGI-compatible hardware, weatherstripping, and glazing components on our trucks, and most single-window installs finish in one visit. The way most homeowners find us is simple: a window that won’t close cleanly after the marine layer rolls through, or a frame that’s started weeping rust onto a stucco sill.

CGI builds impact-rated windows designed for hurricane and coastal zones. That engineering is exactly why San Diego owners choose them, and why a failing CGI part can’t be swapped with whatever the hardware aisle has on the hook. The tolerances are tighter, the balances are heavier, and the corrosion exposure here, salt air off the bay and ten months of UV, punishes cheap substitutes in a single season.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

Most CGI work we see in San Diego falls into three series: the CGI Estate collection (aluminum frames, common in coastal condos and older custom homes), the CGI Targa series (impact-rated, often spec’d in newer builds from Point Loma to Del Cerro), and CGI’s Sentry line (high-impact, heavier frames, popular in canyon-adjacent homes where wind load matters). The glazing and hardware requirements differ across all three, so the first thing we verify is the serial plate.

Every CGI window carries an etching or sticker on the frame edge, usually on the hinge side of the sash. It lists the product line, the glass make-up (typically a laminated impact pane paired with tempered or annealed inner lites), and the manufacturing date. If the sticker is faded, which we see constantly after ten years of west-facing sun in San Diego, we measure the visible glass width and the frame pocket depth as a fallback. One compatibility gotcha: CGI’s older Estate frames used a 7/8″ insulated glass unit, while current production runs 1″ to 1-1/8″. Swapping a 1″ unit into a 7/8″ pocket without re-shimming the stops will bind the sash and ruin the weather seal. OEM CGI parts cost 30 – 50% more than quality aftermarket equivalents, but for load-bearing balance assemblies and impact glazing, we recommend OEM. For weatherstripping, rollers, and lock hardware, reputable aftermarket lines hold up fine in our climate.

Hale Windows San Diego is an independent window and door specialist. We are not affiliated with CGI. We stock and install their products because we know them well, and because half of our service calls in coastal San Diego are CGI or PGT units.

Signs Your CGI Window Installation Is Failing

  • The sash drops when you release it. A worn balance assembly, usually a spiral or block-and-tackle unit, has lost tension. This is the single most common CGI failure we replace in San Diego, and it worsens fast once it starts.
  • You can see daylight or feel draft at the bottom corners. The vinyl bulb weatherstrip has compressed flat or torn. Salt air accelerates this; we see 5-7 year lifespans on weatherstripping in coastal ZIP codes versus 10+ inland.
  • The crank or pivot shoe grinds or skips. CGI’s casement operators use a worm-gear mechanism that strips when the underlying hinge is binding. Forcing the crank over time rounds the gear teeth, and the whole operator needs replacing.
  • Condensation between the glass panes. The sealed insulating unit has lost its desiccant charge and the argon or krypton fill has escaped. You’re looking at glass replacement, not just hardware, and the existing sash usually has to be re-glazed on-site.
  • The frame corners show white powder or rust streaking. In aluminum-frame CGI units, salt spray and stucco contact create galvanic corrosion at the corners. Once the corner key starts oxidizing, the frame weakens and the corner join expands, which then throws the sash out of square.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

CGI Window Installation Scope Typical San Diego Price
Single sash balance assembly (parts + labor) $180 – $340
Weatherstripping full-perimeter replacement per window $120 – $260
Casement operator replacement $195 – $385
Insulated glass unit replacement (impact, per sash) $450 – $1,100
Full frame replacement, CGI Estate or Targa $850 – $2,400 per opening

San Diego pricing for CGI work runs slightly above the national average because of two factors: coastal corrosion prep (we sand, prime, and seal aluminum frames before installing any new hardware), and impact glazing costs, which are fixed by CGI’s spec. Every quote you get from Hale Windows San Diego is written, itemized, and in your hands before any work starts. That means the parts line, the labor line, and the disposal fee are all spelled out. No change orders materialize mid-job. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies here: if the installation is not done right, we make it right, no argument needed.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a handful of checks you can safely do yourself. Close the sash and run a dollar bill along the weatherstrip; if it slides freely, the seal is shot. Check the hinge screws for looseness with a screwdriver. Open the sash fully and examine the track for salt buildup or debris. None of these require tools beyond common sense.

What I’d recommend against: replacing a balance assembly yourself on a large CGI picture window or casement, especially anything with a spring under tension. These units store enough force to break a finger if they release wrong. Re-glazing an impact-rated insulated unit is also not a one-person job; the glass is heavy, the gasket tolerances matter, and a failed seal means you’ve bought the glass twice. A window that leaks air is just a very expensive wall decoration. If the fix feels beyond what you’d confidently show a building inspector, call us at (619) 793-3248 and we’ll quote it free.
