PGT Window Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a PGT window that won’t close squarely, leaks air around the sash, or has a failed balance or roller, we stock the PGT-compatible hardware to get it working again. Typical installed repair pricing for PGT window parts in San Diego runs $185 to $540 depending on the component, and most replacements are completed in one visit. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a window that drags, drops, or won’t stay up without a prop stick.

We’re an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with PGT, but we work with their hardware daily. Spencer Odell and our crew have replaced enough PGT balances, rollers, and weatherstripping across San Diego, from Clairemont to Mission Valley, to know exactly which parts match which series without guesswork.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds several lines with interchangeable hardware in some cases, and not in others. The WinGuard series (impact-rated, common near the coast), SpectraGuard, and the 400/700 series all use different balance systems and roller profiles. The quickest way to identify what you have: look at the spacer bar between the glass panes or the corner of the frame for a laser-etched label with the series name and glass code. If that label is missing, measure the glass thickness; WinGuard impact units run 7/16-inch or 9/16-inch laminated, while standard SpectraGuard units are closer to 3/4-inch insulated.
One compatibility gotcha we see often: PGT changed their balance shoe profile around 2015. A pre-2015 WinGuard double-hung needs a different shoe than a 2018 unit of the same nominal size, even though the outside dimensions match. That’s why we ask for a photo of the failed part before we quote. We stock OEM PGT hardware alongside quality aftermarket equivalents for older models where PGT no longer supplies the original part. For anything under warranty, we’ll tell you to contact PGT directly before spending money with us.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- Window won’t stay up or drops when you release it. This is a failed balance system, typically a broken coil spring or a worn balance shoe. The part is small, but the tension it carries is not; we replace the pair, not just one side, so the window runs evenly.
- Hard to open or close, like it’s grinding. Usually a worn roller assembly on a sliding window or a bent hinge on a casement. PGT rollers use nylon wheels that flatten over time, especially in San Diego’s dry, dusty conditions.
- Air coming in around the sash even when locked. The weatherstripping has compressed or torn. PGT’s original pile weatherstripping typically lasts 5 to 8 years in direct sun before it stops sealing. Replacement strips are inexpensive, but they have to match the slot profile exactly.
- Window is fogged between the glass panes. The seal has failed and moisture is inside the insulated glass unit. The fix is a new IGU, not a hardware swap. We handle that separately and can quote both paths.
- Lock feels loose or won’t engage. The keeper or cam has worn or shifted. On impact-rated PGT windows this also compromises the security rating, so it’s worth fixing promptly.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, expect to pay $185 to $340 for a pair of balance assemblies installed, $160 to $290 for roller replacement on a sliding window, and $90 to $220 for weatherstripping replacement on a standard double-hung. If the glass unit itself has failed, an IGU replacement runs $380 to $900 depending on size and whether it’s impact-rated laminated glass.
| PGT Part | Typical Installed Range (San Diego) | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Balance system (pair) | $185 – $340 | OEM or matched aftermarket, both sides replaced, operation check |
| Roller assembly (sliding window) | $160 – $290 | Wheel assembly, track cleaning, alignment |
| Weatherstripping (double-hung) | $90 – $220 | Full perimeter replacement, air-seal check |
| Insulated glass unit (IGU) | $380 – $900 | New sealed unit, removal of failed IGU, reinstall and seal |
You get a written price before we start, so the number above is the number you pay. Every repair includes a written guarantee: if the part or the work fails, we return for free. That’s part of our 365-Day Done Right Promise, stated on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for a broken balance (the window will feel heavy and drift down), inspect the weatherstripping for tears, and confirm the lock is actually engaging the keeper. You cannot safely service a high-tension balance system without the right tools and a clear sense of where the stored energy goes when released. The spring inside a PGT balance can have enough stored tension to remove a finger if it lets go. We see DIY attempts end with broken glass more than saved money.
If you’re not sure what failed, call (619) 793-3248. You’ll talk to a live person, we’ll ask for a photo of the window and the label, and we’ll tell you over the phone what it likely is and what it costs. No obligation, no sales pitch.
A window that leaks air is just a very expensive wall decoration. If yours isn’t sealing, call us.
FAQs
Balances and rollers typically last 7 to 12 years in San Diego’s climate; the marine layer and salt air near the coast don’t do much to interior hardware, but sun exposure degrades weatherstripping faster, usually within 5 to 8 years. Name your series and we can give you a more specific expectation. Call (619) 793-3248 for an exact assessment.
Occasionally a balance can be re-tensioned or a roller wheel cleaned and lubricated, but if a spring is snapped or a wheel is flattened, replacement is the only lasting fix. We’ll tell you straight which path makes sense and quote you the cheaper one if it will actually hold. Call (619) 793-3248 and we’ll walk through the symptoms.
Most single-window hardware swaps take 45 to 90 minutes on site. IGU replacement runs longer because we remove the old glass unit, prep the frame, and seal the new one; plan for 2 to 3 hours. We schedule a window of time that works for you, and the technician’s name and photo are sent to you before we arrive.
We keep common PGT balance sizes, rollers, and weatherstripping on the truck for most double-hung and sliding models. For rare series or odd sizes we order directly from PGT or our aftermarket suppliers, which is usually 3 to 5 business days. Send a photo of the failed part and we’ll tell you if it’s a same-visit fix or a follow-up.
